Mercy Johnson-Okojie was born in Lagos State, the fourth child of seven children to Mr Daniel Johnson, a retired naval officer and Mrs Elizabeth Johnson; she is a native of Okene in Kogi State.
Following her father’s transfer, Mercy relocated with her family to Calabar in Cross River state where she started her primary education. The family would later move back to Lagos state where she continued her primary education at the Nigerian Navy Primary School. She would later attend Rivers State Secondary School as well as the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for her secondary education.
Shortly after leaving secondary school, Mercy got her first break into Nollywood; she auditioned and secured the leading role in the movie, The Maid; even without previous experience or training, The Maid would serve as the breakthrough role for the young Mercy Johnson who had just turned 20, earning her rave reviews and offers for more starring roles. She would go ahead to star in various Nollywood productions such as Hustlers, Baby Oku in America, War in the Palace, and others.
After 5 years in the industry, Mercy Johnson received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2009 African Movie Awards (AMAA). At the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, she would crown her efforts with the Best Actress going for her role in the comedy, ‘Dumebi the Dirty Girl.’ Mercy has also won other Best Actress Awards from the Nollywood Movies Awards and the Best of Nollywood Awards. She has over twenty awards and nominations.
In 2011, Mercy Johnson married the Uromi, Edo state born Prince Odianosen Okojie. She enrolled in the Lagos State University(LASU) later that year to study English Language.Their union produced three children; Purity Oebhajimente Okojie, Henry Ehizele Okojie and Angel Onosetale Okojie. Their love story and obvious devotion to each other continues to inspire her fans across Africa with every picture of the couple going viral on blogs and social media.
In 2017, she was appointed Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on entertainment, arts and culture to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. As part of her portfolio, the celebrated actress is holding a state-wide talent hunt to find the next crop of Nollywood stars from Kogi State.
Through her eponymously named not-for-profit, the Mercy Johnson Foundation, Mercy provides support to indigent Nigerians in the area of education.
Mercy has grown to be one of Nollywood’s most popular and loved actors; in 2011 and 2012 she emerged Nigeria’s most searched celebrity on Google and since then continues to maintain her status as one of the five biggest actresses out of Africa. She is followed by around 5 million fans across social media.
